Soundscapes Field Recordings — Music
Seleki Family
Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa

I was in Soweto working on a short form documentary video for the Southern Africa HIV/AIDS Collaboration. Just after videotaping an interview in a local high school adjacent to the soccer field where the Apartheid Movement had begun a few years before, I thought it strange hearing a group of people singing outdoors. I headed toward the sound and found 12 or so members of the Seleki Family practicing outside their very simple housing structure. I was entranced by the beauty of their performance. Fortunately, I had a couple of good microphones with me and the semi-professional Sony DVCAM camcorder I was using had the ability to record stereo audio in a high resolution. The Selekis were very gracious in receiving me and encouraging the recording of their singing.
